General Analysis - Structure of documentaries

Narrative structure -

Open - loose ends which are not tied up at the end. e.g. Tv - soap operas.

Vs

Closed - there is a definite conclusion to the narrative.

Linear - Follows chronological order.

Vs

Non - linear - Things are not in time order. e.g. flashback or flashforward.

Circular - Start and end point are the same. e.g. Film - Prince of Persia, the sands of time.

Visuals - Television is a visual medium.

The programme needs to be visually stimulating. It has to be to maintain the audiences interests.

For example, Archive material, street scenes, open countryside, close ups of faces = Stock Footage.

Interviews - An inteview can be held anywhere, but the setting (mise - en - scene) does affect the meaning of the documentary.

VOX POP (vox populis) = voice of the people.

When a person goes out on a street and just grabs different people and asks them the same question and then chooses which peoples / answers they actually use.
